Sometimes Ill be cruising down the highway looking left and right, back and forth until I spot what looks like a neat scene to photograph. I think a lot of times I pass up on these opportunities simply due to timing or the lack of parking along a narrow strip of road. Both of which are lame excuses for I don't know what. So I stopped and shot.....and this is what I came away with. Experimenting with some 1/4 second bursts along a rushing river. My goal here was to capture something that could not be seen by the naked eye.

Sometimes the smallest things in nature can be the most rewarding. Next time you find yourself wandering down a trail, stop and look. Find those things that you've been walking by all this time. Get next to your subject and get as close as you can and focus in on what you find interesting. Enjoy.

Ive had my eye on birds lately. More specifically the crazy twists and turns they do in flight while in formation. I liked the simplicity of these birds over the stark sky. A different kind of abstract.

Badlands

I had a chance to explore some of the Badlands in eastern Alberta this year. So much of the surrounding area is flat, but as we approached the inner areas, this is where it got really interesting. Valleys and canyons shaped by erosion from melting glaciers thousands of years ago. Some really interesting events took place here.

Here's an intimate look at some of my favorite foliage out there. This False Hellibore foliage grows in meadows of the sub alpine region, at least that's where I find it most times. I'm drawn to shooting these plants simply because of the way they grow in close proximity to each other and how the leaves overlap one another. As they mature, the leaves themselves begin to curl and fold over onto each other exposing their pale backsides to the morning dew.

Alien Imprint

I was able to visit a couple of remote beaches this past summer, accessible only by boat or seaplane. This one area known as Rugged Point Marine Provincial Park had so many interesting textures and designs on the shore line. I liked this one because it reminds me of an alien like creature from one of my favorite movies - "Signs".

A few years ago I learned about how waves actually work, how they build, curl and create energy. Its really neat stuff. Each wave carries its own energy signature so to speak thus creating these waves of sand after pounding into the surf.

The mysterious shapes and textures of abstract photography has really started to grab my attention. Whether it be something obvious or not, the whole idea around capturing these scenes has become somewhat of an obsession for me. Ive only begun, but now the search is on.

Magic Eye

Some of my favorite foliage lies within the sub alpine region...like this green patch of Marsh Marigolds. They look so hardy and yet so delicate the way they grow amongst each other. They appear brighter than other plants probably due to their waxy like surface that reflects water after it rains. I sat here for a little bit before shooting, feeling the leaves and just observing. The more I gazed the more this scene reminded me of one of those magic eye pictures I used to look at when I was a kid. You know, the blurry images you'd stare at for a good 30 seconds before the great revealing of whatever it was that was behind all those distorted lines. This kind of reminded me of that.

Dry Earth

Sand and mud come together to form this maze of cracked earth. Heat plays a role in drying the surface which draws the mud apart creating all these interesting lines.

I am a strong believer that when it comes to opportunity, things can happen for a reason. I'm always telling my kids , when one opportunity escapes us, another presents itself. This happens more often than I realize at times. We'll be driving to our destination and something happens along the way that throws off our timing. We don't make it......., but that's okay because most times it takes us somewhere different. A new discovery maybe.... or a new experience. I'm thankful for these moments.... from which our path intersects another and our course is altered. I've had countless great experiences from this. I'm a lot more aware of them now then before and in turn, less disappointed. I was on route to my destination where some friends and I were meeting up for a weekend hike. I was only supposed to be waiting for maybe a 1/2 hr-45 minutes. They were late...quite late actually. This lead to a nice relaxing evening of watching the sun pass through the trees casting its light upon these floating lily pads. A surprising change in color took place as the sun was setting.

Dimensions

When I first saw this out on the trail I thought to myself...WOW! What a beautifully chaotic piece of abstract nature has left here for me to find. When I got home, I looked over the unfinished RAW file and felt it needed some work to get it to the point where I could see more detail...more dimension. I struggled with this one, trying to find a result that I was happy with. After several attempts I gave up. This happens. Sometimes those stunning scenes don't work out the way I hope and sometimes in the field it's what I least expect that brings me those amazing images... . After a few days I decided to take another crack at it. This was one of those times, I'm glad I proved myself wrong.

Wild & Free

In spring, the forest floor comes to life with vegetation. A place full of things just waiting to be discovered. The clovers delicate nature and layered composition is what really draws me in. It can be quite therapeutic wandering through forests, searching for various types of foliage. The early morning dew rests on the leaves, accumulating and eventually rolling down towards it's center. A neat process which takes hours I'm sure.
